Sarasota Fl has seen an explosion in population catapulting this sleepy sw florida community to one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. It is home to a growing population of new Floridians who require a myriad of services with healthcare being one of the most necessary.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital is a publicly funded hospital that has serviced that growing community since its founding in 1925. It has achieved numerous awards for excellence. But when Covid happened, and 32 families had loved ones died alone due to the stringent covid protocols, the public hospital board meetings became a rally cry for people from all over to state their concerns and demand accountability.
The use of remdesivir in treating covid patients in the hospital setting came under scrutiny by both members of the healthcare community and the public.
JAN 3 2024, Fl Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo called for a halt in the use of covid-19 vaccines. The recommendations of the state’s top doc were posted on the SMH website. Despite numerous members of the public presenting comments during SMH Board Meetings, where many facts on the serious adverse events documented were clearly stated, the vaccine protocols did not change.
But when the recommendation to discontinue the Covid-19 shot by both Florida’s Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo and Governor Ron DeSantis was ignored by the hospital board, the public became concerned. They wanted to know how a public hospital that is decidedly going against the recommendation by Florida’s top Doctor, can continue to get funding from taxpayers?
Meet, David Verinder, since 2014 he has been President & CEO of Sarasota memorial hospital . He had a previous working relationship with Lee Health Pres and CEO, Larry Antonucci, when Verinder wand Antonucci were Chair and Vice Chairman
at LEESAR INC., a group purchasing and supply chain company servicing the hospital industry.
In June 2017 Antonucci became President and CEO of Lee Health and by June of 2024, through the passing of Florida SB 227 and a 9-1 vote by Lee Health's board of directors, a decision to convert Lee health, a public County Hospital, into a private non profit hospital was codified. All that waits is the Lee County Commissioner vote.
The case to privatize was made when Lee Health stated a conversion would bring gains of $1 billion over the 10-year forecast after taking an initial hit.
The idea is being discussed at Sarasota Memorial. FOR SMH, As a private nonprofit there would be greater opportunities to grow and scale services regionally and to enter joint ventures, including with physicians, which is not possible as a public system. The conversion would also allow SMH to expand outside of the county.
Who really would benefit from the Privatization of a public hospital like Sarasota Memorial Hospital? In a post covid age whereby the public is reconsidering their relationship with the medical establishment due to fallout from CDC mandates, a growing distrust for the medical institution including the pharmaceutical industry has spread.
The breach of trust between doctor and patient after advice given to patients proved detrimental, leaving patients injured without compensation, or vengeance brought on by bad healthcare policies, has been the fuel of passionate comments by the public at SMH board meetings.
While holding much responsibility, a member of the hospital board is an unpaid position. On August 20th, 9 candidates are running to fill 4 sarasota memorial hospital board seats. However this campaign season has been anything but business as usual. A slate of medical freedom candidates has emerged.
Mary Flynn O’Neil, is the Executive Director of America’s Future, Inc a nonprofit organization. She also oversees the Little Flower Advisory Board of “Project Defend & Protect Our Children,” established by America’s Future to eradicate the exploitation and trafficking of children. This is one of the key areas in which Ms. O’Neil has concerns.
O’Neil is aware children are moved through hospital systems to treat those who have been repeatedly sexually abused through trafficking. Due to the recent flood of illegal immigrants ,many being children seeking medical treatment in the ERs have no money and no insurance to pay. SMH accounts receivables is at $500M in unpaid services. Services that the taxpayer will cover .
O’Neil is also concerned about the Hospital Charter. Specifically Section 9 whereby the hospital can exercise eminent domain to take land and raise money with bonds to engage in real estate transactions. O’Neil believes the hospital is using its value as a way to attract developers to continue the overbuilding seen on the sw Florida coast. This is of concern as the clearing of land creates more exposure and higher risks when hurricanes strike. She sees this as a serious environmental impact and the lack of road infrastructure to support more development is currently unsustainable.
Privatization will also encourage contracts and partnerships that lead to massive profits as seen during COVID between big pharma and the medical institutions. It will also limit the access of information to the public about the nature of the business decisions, profits and rationale for treatment protocols being issued. Informed consent will be less informed.
SMH board meetings have garnered national attention when members of of the Health and Freedom movement clashed with members of the hospital board.
Candidates like Mary Flynn O’Neil were inspired to run for the Hospital board due to what she claims that COVID exposed a public hospital acting as if it were a private institution.
Sarasota was enforcing a no visitation policy for loved ones who died alone. Patients with serious heart conditions were untreated and died from heart attacks. Hospital employee whistleblowers came forward to O’neill as they were appalled at the COVID rules that were followed inconsistently when it came to certain units inside the hospital.
An anonymous source said there are three Health and Freedom board members now and they would need to have at least two more, but prefer four more candidates in order to garner a 7-2 health freedom board and maintain the public hospital status. They want to fight against following flawed hospital protocols for covid and preserve the right of doctors to prescribe FDA approved drugs off-label for Covid.
3. SMH Hospital Administrators have refused to acknowledge any of the recommendations from our Surgeon General, Dr. Ladapo. or to listen to pleas from doctors like Dr. John Littell regarding Covid therapeutics.
The incumbent hospital board and CEO have made their agenda clear. Allegedly they are still requesting employees be vaccinated for C-19. They would like to replace certain current board members who are clearly aligned with putting the patients over profits. My personal experience attending board meeting is that many on the board have been resistant in recognizing the taxpaying public and their concerns (on their website and at meetings), or in addressing the hospital deaths as a result from CMS protocols.
This August 20th Election to fill 4 hospital board seats is of high importance to the residents of Sarasota Florida. Maintaining public access to information, informed consent, healthcare protocols based on patient outcomes and while balancing profits ultimately affects the taxpayer. More visibility into the business relationships that drive patient care while ensuring financial stability can only be achieved through civic duty and public vigil. It is up to you Sarasota, get out and vote.
